Assam BJP leaders have appealed to Union Home Minister Amit Shah to grant the status of 'autonomous state’ to Karbi Anglong.

Home Minister Amit Shah visited the hill district on Thursday to conduct a public rally in Dengaon area in poll-bound Assam.

In a press conference, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council chief executive member Tuliram Ronghang said the implementation of Article 244 (A) of the Indian Constitution and the creation of an autonomous state has been a long-pending demand of the group.

"The implementation of Article 244 (A) of the Constitution of India and creation of an autonomous state are long-standing demands. We have [Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao] a geographical area of 10,434 sq km, and it is much bigger than Goa, Sikkim and Tripura. We need a political solution. We need an autonomous state which is a state within state, as per the Constitution of India. We need all rounds of development in the area. On behalf of Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao we demand the central government to create an autonomous state,” Tuliram Ronghang said.

BJP MP Horen Sing Bey said the non-implementation of the Article has forced youth in the state to pick up arms.

“The youth has picked up arms due to non-implementation of Article 244(A). It is a democratic right of the people of Karbi Anglong. It is also our political and constitutional right,” Horen Sing Bey said.
