TENKASI: Amidst his hectic campaigning schedule in south
on a sunny Sunday afternoon,
took an unscheduled break to quench his thirst at a roadside
shop at Nallurvilakku near
on the Tirunelveli - Tenkasi road.
The Congress leader was amused by the vendor's style of opening the tender coconut in one cut. He asked the vendor, Shanmugam, 45, to cut one more tender coconut and watched him do it.
While sipping tender coconut water, Rahul asked Shanmugam about his business, how long he had been into it, his family and earnings daily and annually.
He also asked Shanmugam about his two children, their education and what he wanted them to study. He tried to understand what he could do for the roadside vendor at a policy level.
Rahul tasted a piece of tavun (edible portion of sprouted palm seed) from the shop and bought a few more. He asked his attendants to take them to his vehicle.
Before leaving, Rahul paid Rs 500 for the tender coconut and thavun served by Shanmugam to him and his companions.
Earlier, Rahul visited Arulmigu Nellaiappar Gandhimathi Ambal Temple in Tirunelveli. He also addressed beedi workers, farmers and others from a campaign vehicle.
