Former captain Angelo Mathews will be leading Sri Lanka in the upcoming 3-match T20I series in West Indies as captain Dasun Shanaka has not been able to join the rest of the team in West Indies due to visa issues.
Dasun Shanaka was named the captain of the Sri Lanka T20I team but he did not board the flight with his Sri Lanka teammates on Monday after his inability to arrange for a transit visa to the United States, Sri Lanka Cricket has said.
Angelo Matthews will lead Sri Lanka at the Coolidge Cricket Ground in Antigua which will host all 3 T20Is from March 3 to 7. Sri Lanka will play 3 ODIs as well as 2 Tests during their long tour of the West Indies.
"Mathews was appointed by the national selectors as Dasun Shanaka, who was appointed as the T20 captain for the tour of West Indies, is yet to join the team owing to a delay in obtaining a U.S. transit visa," the Sri Lanka Cricket said.
"Shanaka confronted this issue pursuant to the loss of his previous passport, which had a valid visa for the USA stamped on it.
"He is expected to join the team once the issue is resolved."
All the matches will be held behind closed doors in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.
